Advanced quantum topics will be addressed, which are usually not covered in the first course on quantum mechanics. The main themes will be the effects of electromagnetic field quantisation as well as the most general statistical way of treating quantum evolution. This will lead us to a very general description of system-environment dynamics. Other themes are quantum statistical mechanics and the use of the Aharanov-Bohm effect to change fermions into bosons and vice versa.
Syllabus: Field Quantisation, Time dependent perturbation theory, Atoms and Photons, Jaynes-Cummings, Casimir Effect and Spontaneous Emission, Theory of Completely Positive Operators, Systems and Environments, Decoherence, Master equation, Quantum Statistical Mechanics, Fermions and bosons, Geometric phases: abelian and non-abelian, Aharonov-Bohm effect, Transmutation of statistics, Anyons, Second Quantisation
