Since the advent of the genome area, bioinformatics has developed to an essential discipline for the analysis of biomolecular data. This lecture provides an overview on bioinformatics methods for the analysis of prokaryotic and eukaryotic genomes and emphasizes comparative genomics. Both established methods and tools, e.g. for gene prediction or functional and structural classification of proteins, and newly developed methods, e.g. for inferring functions from genomic associations, will be explained and discussed. Practical exercises will demonstrate the application of selected software tools to typical problems.
