Aims, contents and method of the course

Aims: Introduction to European Competition Law
Contents: The course aims at training students to solve practical cases in EU competition law. During the course, selected judgments of the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) in the field of EU competition law (i.e. Art. 101 and 102 TFEU and Reg. 139/2004) will be analyzed.
Method: Lecture and discussion of mock cases

Assessment and permitted materials

Assessment: The assessment is based on a final written exam (i.e. take-home essay).
Permitted materials: open book exam.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

50% for a positive grade, based on the written exam and participation during class.
Students who actively participate in the course by summarizing the facts and the content of one of the judgments or solving the mock case assigned for the class will receive a +. Every + will increase the final grade of 0.25 points, up to a maximum of 1 point.

Reading list

Students are required to read the selected CJEU judgments and EU legislation before each virtual class.
In addition, students are strongly advised to read chapters 20 (p. 865-917) and 21 (p. 918-969) from the textbook CHARLMES, DAVIES, MONTI, EU Law. Texts and Materials, 4th edition. The background reading is available on Moodle.
