Aims, contents and method of the course

Course Objective: Students are able to communicate and to discuss the fundamental principles of Austrian collective labor law in English. In addition to the transfer of knowledge and teaching English legal terminology, the focus is on strengthening linguistic self confidence in practice.

Content: The course will focus on the fundamental principles of collective labor law such as
• key institutions and mechanisms of collective representation of interest, including the structure of Chambers and trade unions in Austria;
• the sectoral collective bargaining and its impact on employment relations;
• company-level co-determination highlighting the role of works councils and their influence on workplace decisions;
• works agreements;
• free works agreements and establishment practices.

This content is taught using practice-oriented examples, discussions, peer learning & feedback and language learning methods. The course partly builds on the content of the lectures "VU Betriebliche Mitbestimmung" and "VU Überbetriebliche Mitbestimmung".

earning Outcome:
By the end of this course, students will be able to explain the Austrian system of collective labor law in English and engage in discussions about its key aspects. By revision of content that has already been covered in other German lectures, this course aims to ensure both, an increased confidence in discussing these topics in English as well as a deeper understanding of the subject.
