Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This single-day workshop provides an application-oriented introduction to the essentials of exposé and outline writing in English. While some time will be devoted to the specifics of English academic language - vocabulary, grammar, paragraphing, style -, a substantial part of this course focuses on the structure and functions of a doctoral thesis proposal: introducing your topic and/or project, reviewing the state-of-the-art research in your field, formulating research questions and hypotheses, research design and methods as well as a work plan and schedule for the research project. Drawing on helpful techniques such as mind-mapping and by discussing numerous examples, the crucial points of writing an exposé or outline are all covered: defining and focusing a research project, showing a gap or niche in current research as well as presenting your own position within the larger research community.
