Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
This course is designed to refresh or polish academic writing skills in English. It is the opportunity for those actively involved in writing academic papers to take a step back and look at what is involved in the process. This will involve:* a top down approach to writing: an examination of what constitutes agood paragraph and how to create coherence and unity in a text.* a bottom-up approach: polishing sentence level aspects such aspunctuation and grammatical and stylistic features.* a specific look at the requirements of some of the sections of aresearch paper, such as the abstract and the introduction. The course will involve an analysis of model texts that illustrate good or not so good academic writing. The idea is that if you are able to identify why a piece of writing is good you will then be able to apply these techniques to your own writing. Participants will be given the opportunity to bring in or produce samples of their own writing in order to get feedback.
