Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This half-day seminar aims at helping participants to make their English sound more authentic and avoid typical pronunciation and vocabulary mistakes by taking a closer look at typical non-native speaker mistakes in these two areas. We will explore and practice problem sounds (v/w, th etc.) and sound sequences (-ction, -able etc.) as well as homographs (words with one spelling but different pronunciations for different meanings or grammatical functions). The second part of the seminar will focus on 'false friends' (e.g. actual vs. aktuell), i.e. words that look like they might mean the same in both languages but do not. Finally, we will also address problems of literally translating German sentences into English.

Assessment and permitted materials

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Aided by trainer input and feedback, participants will practice and consolidate their pronunciation and use of vocabulary individually as well as in pairs and small groups.

Examination topics

Each problem sound and sound sequence will be practiced in isolation as well as in context. 'False friends' and problematic translations will be explained in detail and tried out in some exercises.
