Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This course is designed to refresh or polish academic writing skills in English. It is the opportunity for those actively involved in writing academic papers to take a step back and look at what is involved in the process. Whereas Part 1 in the winter semester focussed on a top down approach to writing, Part 2 will focus more on the sentence level of writing. You do not need to have taken Part 1 to be able to enrol in Part 2.

Part 2 will cover:
- Sentence structure
- Sentence length
- Academic style in terms of verb tense, vocabulary choice
- Commenting on diagrammatic information
- Making generalisations and qualifications
- Language of cause and effect
- Language of comparison and contrast
- Paraphrasing and summarising
- Punctuation
