1. To offer an overview of Irish political, social and cultural history during the twentieth century;

3. To consider the relationship between indigenous and international trends;

5. To develop the critical faculty of listening as part of the critique of popular musical discourse.

1. To recognise the major trends in twentieth-century Irish history;

2. To appreciate the structural economy of the dominant forms of Irish music (folk, popular and art), and to recognise the various genres subsisting within those forms from the 1950s to the present;

3. To appreciate the ways in which popular music engages with discourses of gender, class and race;
