Interactive presentation of the major developments in US-American literature with close readings of representative texts as well as analyses of the historical, political, social and cultural contexts.

Assessment and permitted materials

Reading assignments; final written exam.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The course aims to familiarize students with representative writers, major works, literary movements, and cultural concepts in US-American literature from the beginnings (but: when does US-American Literature begin?) to 1870.
