Examination topics

Considering the subject of the lecture, the lectures will be given in a rather interactive manner (in English) using MS Power-Point with detailed discussions, focusing on current status and trends, both in English and German. Depending on current events, one or two lectures will be modified as necessary. The so-called Blended Learning approach using the eLearning platform Moodle of the Vienna University has been introduced. Electronic copies of the overheads and other documents will be made available through the eLearning platform. These lectures will be suitably complemented by related technical excursions within Austria or abroad.

Assessment and permitted materials

Assessment will be done on the basis of class attendance/performance and a home examination at the end of the semester.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

This series of lectures will highlight the main issues of concern related to radioactive waste management, including spent nuclear fuel and disused sealed radioactive sources, and put them into perspective. It will provide an overview of radioactive waste management covering technological, safety, security and non-proliferation aspects as well as policies, strategies, implementation and public communication based on national experiences. It will assist in increasing the understanding of radioactive waste management issues by all relevant stakeholders (e.g. public and interest groups, national authorities, organizations involved in radioactive waste management and the nuclear industry).
