Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung
The course explores developments in the field of education in East Asia during the period of the existence of the University of Vienna (1365-2015). There will be no focus on one particular country in the region or on one particular time period. Together with the instructors, students discuss institutions, ideals and goals, and practice of education in East Asia as well as the relationship between women and education in the region. Students furthermore discover parallels to education in Europe, in particular related to the history of the University of Vienna and its surroundings.
Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel
The grade will be determined based on the assessment of: active participation; presentation (interim report) with PPT and handout; presentation (final report) with PPT and poster.
Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab
Prüfungsstoff
Students form four working groups, each of which will be supervised by three or more instructors from the staff of the Department of East Asian Studies. Each of these working groups covers one of the four focus areas (institutions; ideals and goals; practice; women and education) in the form of guided team work. The working groups are each further divided into sub-teams, each of which covers the focus area in a particular time period (14th-17th century, 17th-19th century, first half of the 20th century, second half of the 20th century).

Readings will be assigned by the team instructors through Moodle.
