Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

This seminar focuses on documentary film and performance in contemporary China. Through discussion and comparison of selected film, theatre, dance, and intermedia works, and supported by relevant scholarship, the seminar will explore the socio-cultural and economic contexts that have shaped the development of independent filmmaking and performance ecologies since the early 1990s and critically analyze the aesthetic strategies, visual and narrative techniques, and thematic concerns addressed by filmmakers and performance practitioners during this period. Discussions will highlight the ways in which these independent practices challenge dominant narratives and aesthetic frameworks while engaging with collective memories of major historical events and contemporary socio-political realities, for example through the representation and participation of subaltern subjects (e.g., marginalized artists, migrant workers), activist issues, and embodied memory.
The intersections between screen-based media and performance will also be foregrounded. General theories of performative documentary and documentary theatre and performance as well as specific Chinese concepts and discourses will be introduced to examine the relationship between liveness and mediatization, the integration and function of performative elements in documentary film and, conversely, of film and video elements in documentary theatre and dance productions, and how these approaches blur the boundaries between objectivity and subjectivity, fact and fiction, ‘truthful’ recording and artistic representation.

By the end of the seminar, participants will have gained an understanding of the cultural and economic forces that have influenced the production and reception of independent documentary film and performance in postsocialist China, as well as the critical discourse surrounding these art forms. They will have developed an appreciation of the diversity of contemporary voices and perspectives, a critical sensitivity to the aesthetic characteristics and socio-political implications of independent documentary practices, and an awareness of the expressive possibilities offered by the hybridization of media and performance formats. They will have become familiar with aspects of critical theory in film, performance, and cultural studies, as well as methods of film and performance analysis, visual and textual analysis, and close reading, and will be encouraged to apply relevant theoretical frameworks and methodological approaches to their own analysis.

2) Presentations (film and performance analysis; reading reports) 35%

3) Final written paper (in English or German; 10 pages = approx. 3,500 words (Times New Roman 12, 1.5 spacing, regular margins) excluding bibliography. 45%. Deadline: Friday 16 February 2024, submission via Moodle.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

The seminar is conducted in English. The required viewing materials will be made available with English subtitles. The required readings will be in English, but participants are welcome to use Chinese materials in written papers and seminar assignments.

Each session consists of a brief contextual introduction followed by presentations and interactive discussions on the materials assigned for independent viewing and reading ahead of each session. Regular preparation of seminar materials and active participation are essential to the successful completion of the seminar.

The final written paper can either build on the content of the presentations or address a new topic chosen by the student and agreed with the course leader. It can be written in English or German.

All assignments must be fulfilled to attain a positive overall grade. The final paper must be passed to pass the course, regardless of the partial grades achieved in the other assignments.

Late submission penalties: One full grade will be deducted for each week (or part of a week) of delay, i.e., up to 1 week: -1; up to 2 weeks.

No more than 3 unjustified absences (three sessions) are allowed.

AI Policy: The use of artificial intelligence (AI) tools for editing, proofreading, and improving the quality and clarity of writing is permitted and encouraged (e.g. for checking spelling, grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, word choice, language polishing and revision). The use of generative AI tools (text generation tools) to produce seminar papers or any other type of assignment is not permitted. This is prone to plagiarism and error (especially on highly specialized topics) and is against the principles of academic integrity. To ensure good academic practice, the lecturer may, on a case-by-case basis, ask students to reflect on their seminar work in an oral discussion. Students must successfully pass this discussion in order to receive a grade.
