Martin Mandl is an external lecturer at the Department of East Asian Studies. He holds an MA (2016) in East Asian Economy and Society (EcoS) and a BA (2019) in Modern China Studies from the University of Vienna as well as a BA (2008; International Business Studies) from the FH KufsteinTirol, Austria. His undergraduate studies also took him to the Dongbei University of Finance and Economics, China, and the National Cheng Kung University, Taiwan.
Since 2017, Martin has lectured on the political systems and international relations of East Asia. Together with Alfred Gerstl, he is offering the Strategic Gaming, an interactive negotiation simulation class focusing on current East Asian conflicts.
As a former hospitality manager, Martin's research interests include the culinary culture(s) of East Asia, the role of food in the building of national and regional identity, and as a means of new public diplomacy. He has recently published on Taiwan’s Gastrodiplomacy.
For the Central European Institute of East Asian Studies (CEIAS), he authored and co-authored research on China-Europe academic engagement and East Asian reactions to Russia's war in Ukraine. He is a former editorial member of “ASIEN – The German Journal of Contemporary Asia” and was the technical editor of the “Vienna Journal of East Asian Studies”.
