Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The term "Cold War" describes an approximately 50-year period of the 20th century, from the end of World War II to the end of the Soviet Union, and focuses on the competition between the great global powers, the USA and the USSR. Research focused primarily on international organizations, arms races, strategic security policies, and the economic, diplomatic, and ideological dichotomy of the world. In recent decades, Cold War Studies has increasingly freed itself from this normative corset and sought new research perspectives.
In the seminar we will look at the foundations of the Cold War and trace the change in research perspectives. The aim of the seminar is to get to know a current subfield of historical research as well as theoretical concepts and methodological approaches belonging to it.
The seminar is composed of the following parts:
- Intensive text discussion
- Presentation of a text from the seminar reading
- Research of a source example
- Development of research concepts

Assessment and permitted materials

Successful completion includes oral participation, preparation of a text, researching an appropriate source example, and drafting a research concept.
