Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Despite the fact that Austrians rarely use English for communication amongst each other, it is still everywhere to be found: in newspapers, periodicals or on street signs, on the radio and TV as well as the internet. English is also increasingly used in education at all levels, and many companies couldn’t do anymore without English as the lingua franca amongst business partners.
This course will involve studying selected aspects of how English functions in Austrian daily life. Participants will learn about various sociolinguistic research agendas and, by undertaking small-scale empirical research, they will be able to critically compare language practice and language policy issues.

Assessment and permitted materials

Participants will be assessed on the basis of their oral presentations, active participation in (online) discussions and written research papers. All presentations will take place during a seminar conference in May 28 (afternoon) and 29 (all day). Full participation in the conference is mandatory, so please bear this in mind when registering for the course.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The participants will become familiar with selected sociolinguistic research areas that pertain to English and its functions and use in Austria, such as language policy in education, linguistic landscaping and language attitudes. Additionally, the students will undertake small-scale empirical investigations, thus practising sociolinguistic research methods.

Examination topics

The first sessions will be used to introduce the participants to (a) sociolinguistics, especially language policy and its relationship to language practice and (b) various relevant data collection and analysis procedures. This will be followed by a research phase reserved for individual project work. During a seminar conference in May participants will report on the progress of their projects and attempt to make their findings relevant to one another. The final part of the seminar will be dedicated to the production of written research papers, to be handed in by the end of June.
