Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
Assessment and permitted materials
Participants will be assessed on the basis of their oral presentations, active participation in (online) discussions and written research papers. All presentations will take place during a seminar conference on June 1 (Fri afternoon) and 2 (Sat all day). Full participation in the conference is mandatory, so please bear this in mind when registering for the course.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
The participants will become familiar with selected research areas that pertain to English and its functions and use in tertiary education, such as language policy, classroom discourse and language beliefs. Additionally, the students will undertake small-scale empirical investigations, thus practising applied linguistic research methods.
Examination topics
The first sessions will be used to introduce the participants to (a) language policy and ICLHE (Integrating Content and Language in Higher Education) and (b) various relevant data collection and analysis procedures. This will be followed by a research phase reserved for individual project work. During a seminar conference on June 1+2 (Fri afternoon, Sat all day), participants will report on the progress of their projects and attempt to make their findings relevant to one another. The final part of the seminar will be dedicated to the production of written research papers, to be handed in by the end of June

This course will focus on how English can function in tertiary institutions, in particular on using English as medium of instruction and the implications this can have on the teaching and learning processes. Based on up-to-date research into language policy and ICLHE (Integrating Content and Language in Higher Education), participants will become familiar with the complexity of this applied linguistic concern. By undertaking small-scale empirical research projects, they will analyse the relevant language practices, beliefs and policy documents at particular tertiary institutions.
