Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
Reading of Sumerian literary texts, partly with their parallel versions in Akkadian: Innana's descent into the Netherworld; Gilgamesh XII.
Assessment and permitted materials
The texts will be read in class; students are required to prepare for this and to be ready to partecipate actively in the discussions held in class. In addition, they will give short presentations on pertinent topics.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
The course's aim is to improve the students' knowledge of Sumerian grammar and of the cuneiform script and to introduce them to Sumerian literature and literary language. Overview of critical approaches to editing Mesopotamian literary texts. 50% of the evaluation will depend on the indivual preparation of the texts (transliteration, translation, grammatical analysis); another 30% will depend on the degree and quality of the individual participation in class discussions; 20% will depend on the short presentations.
Examination topics
the texts will be read in class; students are required to prepare for this and be ready to partecipate actively in the discussions held in class. Paleography and questions of Sumerian grammar will represent the focus of the discussion. In Addition, the students will give short presentations on pertinent topics.
