Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Selected examples of Ancient Near Eastern and Old Testament love lyrics (in the widest possible sense) will be examined in a comparative vein. The focus will be on the texts' literary structure, topoi and, to the degree this is feasible, their historical (and social) contextualisation. Texts will be read in translation, but with constant reference to the originals. Classes and contributions will be held in English or German or both, according to the students' wishes and requirements.

Assessment and permitted materials

All students will actively participate in class. Their contributions will depend in part on their prior knowledge of the source languages: there will be presentations based on the secondary literature, philological groundwork focussing on the original texts, and collaborative interdisciplinary work aiming at establishing the grounds for a comparative evaluation of the texts. Students of Ancient Near Eastern studies will write a seminar paper if they want the seminar count towards the fulfilment of the pertinent requirement in the curriculum.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Minimal requirements for receving a pass grade: active participation in class (preparation of the texts to be read, participation in the discussions); oral presentation on a given topic and preparation of a seminar paper (including reaction on feedback) in accordance with the indications given by the teacher of the course and in accordance with the rules of best scientific practice. Participation is mandatory, three classes can be missed. Every single contribution is evaluated separately.
The seminar paper (and, if required, the reaction on feedback) contributes to the final grade by 40%, the oral presentation contributes 20% and regular participation in class, 40%.

Examination topics
