Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
In this seminar, current work of doctoral students in the field of Social Studies of Science/Science and Technology Studies is presented and discussed. The aim is to obtain and formulate feedback from the participants, to practice a critical analysis of a research project/research paper, to learn and practice presentation techniques, and to discuss new approaches in STS.The seminar takes place in the form of a summer school in Raach am Hochgebirge. In addition, two external commentators - renowned foreign researchers in the field of STS - will be invited . They will comment on the presented dissertation projects.
Assessment and permitted materials
Minimum requirements for a positive assessment:
- 2-3 page sketch of the paper, to be submitted on 28 March 2022 (exact structure, description of how the paper should relate to the dissertation) - please send it to ta.sts@univie.ac.at with a copy to ulrike.felt@univie.ac.at
- Written paper (20-25 pages) from the dissertation, to be submitted on 18 May 2022 (latest!) - please send it to ta.sts@univie.ac.at with a copy to ulrike.felt@univie.ac.at
- Oral presentation during the summer school (max. 10 minutes)
- Written preparation of a commentary on a paper of another doctoral student and presentation of this commentary (5-10 minutes) during the summer school - please send it after/during Raach (latest by 27 June 2022) both to the author of the paper and to ulrike.felt@univie.ac.at
- 1-2 page short summary of the most important points of the feedback received on your own paper and how this could possibly be implemented - by 4 July 2022 to ulrike.felt@univie.ac.at
- Reading the handed in chapters of your PhD colleagues and active participation in the discussion

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
Grading of the course is based on the separate assessment of the different tasks on a scale of 1-5.Written paper: 45 percent, individually assessed, individual feedback by the lecturer is provided;
Oral presentation: 15 percent, individually assessed, feedback provided by the lecturer upon request;
Commentary (written + oral): 20 percent, individually assessed, feedback on request;
Active participation in the discussion, punctuality of submission - in particular of paper and sketch: 20 percent, individually assessed, no feedback.Each partial performance is independently evaluated. Attendance, punctuality in handing in papers and adherence to academic standards are required, but can have a negative effect on the overall grade if they are not adhered to. To achieve a positive grade, the weighted average of the sub-grades must be greater than or equal 4.5.Important Grading Information
If not explicitly noted otherwise, all requirements mentioned in the grading scheme and the attendance regulations must be met. If a required task is not fulfilled, e.g. a required assignment is not handed in or if the student does not meet the attendance requirements, this will be considered as a discontinuation of the course. In that case, the course will be graded as ‘fail’ (5), unless there is a major and unpredictable reason for not being able to fulfill the task on the student's side (e.g. a longer illness). In such a case, the student may be de-registered from the course without grading. It is the student’s responsibility to communicate this in a timely manner, and to provide relevant evidence to their claims if necessary. Whether this exception applies is decided by the Vice-Director of the study program.
If any requirement of the course has been fulfilled by fraudulent means, be it for example by cheating at an exam or plagiarizing parts of a written assignment, the entire course will be graded as ‘not assessed’ and will be entered into the electronic exam record as ‘fraudulently obtained’. Self-plagiarism, particularly re-using own work handed in for other courses, will be treated likewise.Presence
Attendance is compulsory during the entire duration of the seminar from 9-11 June 2022.
