Role of mathematics in Science
- formally structuring our perceptions
- overcoming intuition
- driving force of theory development
Thermodynamics and time direction: How you obtain surprisingly reliable results for the properties of systems of unimaginal number of particles
Space, time, spacetime; two revolutions of thinking and methodical questions:
Relativity theory; Cosmology
Genetics: Where information about life is situated, how it is codified and the consequences
Additional topic for self study 'Age determination by radiocarbon method' supported by text in Moodle and an Excursion offer (VERA, Vienna Environmental Research Accelerator)

Interactions
VO Considering the history of sciences chronologically, emphasizing on modern times (from the 16th to the 20th century), with a special focus on social interactions
SE How do religious convictions of scientists have an influence on their scientific research?

Assessment and permitted materials

The EC is finished by finishing sucessfully the contained lecture courses one by one. This lecture course is finished by sucessfully finishing the training course part and passing an exam about the lecture course parts. An oral exam is held by one examiner in more detail about his own theme and in addition about the other contained themes and the supplementary topic making use of the questionnaire Fremdfragenliste (accessible on the moodle platform of the lecture course).

Knowledge, understanding and survey about ways of thinking and methods in the scientific disciplines considered
Improvement of methodical und interdisciplinary competences, e.g.
Comprehension, refined judgment by analytical thinking and suitable verbal description

Interactions
VO to give an insight into the interactions between scientific
thinking and society
SE the participants shall learn to study such interactions, by means of a case study
