Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Due to the current Covid-19 pandemic, this course takes place hybrid with videos, moodle, and a laboratory course.

Students will have in-depth knowledge about processes and mechanisms of environmental chemistry and geochemistry that play a central role in environmental systems. Students know methods of analytical chemistry used in environmental chemistry and will get training in the laboratory.

Assessment and permitted materials

A maximum number of 150 points can be awarded to students participating in exams, exercises, and a laboratory course.

Exams (total of 60 points):
6 short exams (30 minutes) are held during the semester, each of which is worth 10 points. The exam dates are
1. exam: October 11th (Hofmann); 2. exam: October 20th (vd Kammer); 3. exam October 28th (Hüffer); 4. exam November 15th (Krämer); 5. exam November 25th (Kumar); 6. exam December 13th (Stohl).

Exercises (total of 50 points):
5 exercises are done during the semester, each of which is worth 10 points. Further details will be announced via Moodle.

Laboratory (40 points)
The laboratory course will consist of six basic experiments in environmental chemistry (6 points each), an introductory session (2 points), a lab tour, and a safety instruction (2 points). The laboratory course will be held from December 15th until January 31st. Participation in all parts of the laboratory course is mandatory to successfully finish this course. If the laboratory course can not take place due to COVID19-related restrictions, the evaluation will be adapted.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

A total of 150 points can be reached by successful participation of the exams, exercises, and the laboratory course. The points from all these activities are accumulated an the grade is applied to the total number of points reached during the semester. The following grading scheme will be applied:
% - Grade
> 87.5 - 1
75-87.49 - 2
62.5-74.99 - 3
50-62.49 - 4
0-49.99 - 5
At least 50 % of the total points (i.e. 75 points) need to be accumulated to pass. However, keep in mind that attending all parts of the laboratory course is mandatory to pass this course.

Examination topics

1. exercise and exam (20): basics of aquatic chemistry
2. exercise and exam (20): env. chemistry of trace metals
3. exercise and exam (20): env. organic chemistry
4. exercise and exam (20): thermodynamic modelling and kinetics
5. exercise and exam (20): redox processes
6. exam (10): atmospheric chemistry
