Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Finding contextual solutions to both global and local challenges has become a major function of regional innovation policies, underpinned by conceptual shifts towards mission-oriented and challenge-oriented regional innovation policies and third-frame innovation policies. Hence, challenges such as ensuring environmental sustainability and combating climate change have become overarching objectives of regional innovation policies designed to support the reorientation or transformation of regional innovation systems. Moreover, concerns for social and environmental justice have become increasingly salient in regional policies. All these developments require a refocusing of regional policy instruments as well their integration into multi-scalar policy mixes which in turn calls for multi-agent and multi-level alignment in policy design and implementation.
The course analyzes conceptual approaches to regional innovation policies in detail and puts a particular focus on their integration with multi-scalar policy mixes. Students will familiarize themselves with a wide range of conceptual literature on policy approaches and mixes, and discuss them in class. Regular mandatory reading assignments serve as preparation for these discussions.

Assessment and permitted materials

1. Five-minute reflection paper (online in class)
2. Interim exam (open book, online in class)
3. Final exam (open book, online in class)

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

1. Five-minute reflection paper (15%)
2. Interim exam (30%)
3. Final exam (40%)
4. Active participation during class (15%).

Attendance in class is mandatory. Absence during one class will be accepted (except first session).
Students are expected to prepare reading assignments before each class.

Use of generative AI (e.g., ChatGPT) for the written assignments is not accepted and will lead to a failed grade for the assignment.

Examination topics

Students assignments will be assessed in terms of critical reflection and application of lessons learned according to scientific standards. The course involves a significant workload of mandatory reading which is essential for participation in class.

The course requires fundamental knowledge about socioeconomic transformations (particularly from "VU Basics in Socioeconomic Transformations"). A reading list will be provided to give students the opportunity to catch up or recapitulate.

The lecturer will offer feedback on the assignments on request.

Reading list

The mandatory reading list and schedule will be communicated to students after registration.
