Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The second decade of the last century is quite dynamic not only in Bulgarian literature. As it is known, in the period after World War I the Europeans experience a shattering crisis of their humanitarian values. The term shock most aptly describes this powerful shaking and the radical transformation of the world view. The artist's gaze is, generally speaking, directed towards reality. What do we mean by this and how many realities are hidden behind reality? What kind of productive debates could this concept trigger?
In the Bulgarian poetry of the time, processes of various kinds are taking place, in accordance with the trends of European literature: symbolism (as a poetics, but not as a formation!) recedes and modifies itself in other currents, which demonstratively disown it – expressionism, objective poetry, vitalism, imaginism, futurism, constructivism, and so on. Extremely exciting aesthetic syntheses, polemics, antitheses emerge. This opens up a wide field for literary analysis: the overlapping of artistic trends and the establishment of certain authors on the one hand, and, on the other hand, the insight into the work of emblematic Bulgarian poets from thisеr period, whose texts illustrate the respective tendencies (Teodor Trayanov, Nikolay Liliev, Ivan Mirchev, Emanuil Popdimitrov, Geo Milev, Atanas Dalchev, Elisaveta Bagryana, Christo Smirnenski, Nikola Furnadzhiev, Nikolay Marangozov a. o.)
