Aims, contents and method of the course

Objectives: The course “Principles of Toxicology” aims to provide basic knowledge on toxicology and eco-toxicology with special focus on the comprehension of molecular mechanisms of toxicity as well as the modes of action/impact of environmental contaminants.
Content:
Physiological basics in mammalian organisms, introduction to the concepts of Adsorption, Distribution, Metabolism and Excretion.
Molecular mechanisms of toxicity and eco-toxicity centered on:
- Cell structure integrity
- Oxidative stress
- Endocrine disruption
- DNA Damage, genotoxicity
- (Bio)accumulation
Regulatory Toxicology and Risk Assessment, OECD Guidelines for testing chemicals. Concepts of Ecotoxicology and environmental protection.
Case Studies and “Hot-Topics” in toxicology (e.g. Persistent Organic Pollutants).
Method: Lecture with Power Point Slides.

Assessment and permitted materials

Performance assessment will be done online by oral examination (30 min) via BigBlueButton. A computer with camera and micro will be needed.
